The Generation Equality Forum in Paris from 30 June to 2 July

The Generation Equality Forum is a global gathering for equality between women and men, organised by UN Women and co-chaired by France and Mexico, in partnership with and under the leadership of civil society.

After Mexico City in March 2021, the Generation Equality Forum will culminate in Paris from 30 June to 2 July.

25 years after the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action

Twenty-five years after the Fourth World Conference on Women, and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most comprehensive framework for achieving women’s empowerment and gender equality, the Forum will take stock of progress. A programme of concrete measures to achieve gender equality by 2030 will also be developed, as part of the "Generation Equality: For Women’s Rights and an Equal Future" campaign.

The Forum will take the form of an international public discussion in which all relevant actors (civil society, public authorities, local authorities, private sector, media, etc.) will participate. The aim is to achieve concrete partnerships and accountability for rapid action on a larger scale on key issues to achieve gender equality. The focus will be on intergenerational and multi-stakeholder partnerships.

For concrete progress: the action coalitions of the Generation Equality Forum in Paris

The multi-stakeholder action coalitions will be launched at the Generation Equality Forum in July 2021 in Paris. As during the French presidency of the G7, they will bring together governments, civil society and the private sector to achieve concrete and measurable results within five years on the following six themes

  • Gender-based violence
  • Justice and economic rights
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights
  • Women’s action for climate justice
  • Technology and innovation
  • Women’s movements and leadership

These themes have been identified by UN Women in close collaboration with civil society, Mexico and France. Adolescent girls and young women will be at the heart of the work of each action coalition.

The first 65 ’champions’ of the action coalitions were announced on 1 July 2020. They include states, women’s rights and feminist organisations, youth-led organisations, philanthropic entities, UN agencies and other international organisations, representing a wide diversity of women’s voices from around the world.

France will lead a coalition of action on "Right to control one’s own body, sexual and reproductive health and rights" and will mobilise all its partners in the coming months to ensure the success of this historic meeting.
The consequences of the health crisis on gender equality are fully integrated into the work of the Forum’s action coalitions.

The Generation Equality Forum will also launch a Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action Facility, 20 years after the historic adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and the birth of the Women, Peace and Security agenda. This mechanism will complement and create synergies with the six action coalitions of the Equality Forum.
