Second edition of the French Days workshop

Second edition of the French Days workshop

On 29 and 30 July 2019, the Alliance française of Gaborone organised the second edition of the Assises du français, 2 workshop days of training dedicated to all French teachers in Botswana

On 29 and 30 July, the Alliance française of Gaborone organised the second edition of the Assises du français, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the University of Botswana (UB). More than 115 teachers from public and private schools came to Gaborone to participate in this event.

This year, 6 thematic were on the agenda: teaching with the action approach; playing in class of French as a foreign language (FFL); focusing on oral skills in the FFL class; differentiation in a heterogeneous school context; phonetics, phonology, phonography activities in the FFL class; the socio-cultural approach through video in the FFL class. All these points were covered in a booklet that summarized the training and was distributed to all participating teachers.

To mark the event and thank all the partners, Sandrine Maury, the Acting Ambassador, invited all the participants to the Residence of France to continue the discussions over a cocktail.

The French Embassy in Botswana attaches great importance to the expansion of French language teaching as it is the first foreign language taught in Botswana. According to statistics as of January 2017, there are 5,223 French learners in Botswana’s public schools and 63 students at UB. For its part, in 2018, the Alliance française of Gaborone welcomed 401 learners in group courses and 95 in private lessons.

Finally, we would like to thank our partners Orange, the Institut Français and the French Teachers Association of Botswana. Without their support, the organisation of the French Days would not have been possible.
