Science in service of the Environment: the Contest!

The Embassy of France to Botswana, in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Union, the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI), the US Embassy, the Japanese Embassy, the University of Botswana and the British High Commission, organized on Thursday 8th October, 2015 the final stage of the Nationwide contest ‘Science in service of the Environment” at University of Botswana’s auditorium.

The aim of the event was to raise awareness among the youth of Botswana on environmental, economic and social consequences of Climate change, one of the main challenges of the 21st century.

Teams of students from Botswana Public Senior Secondary schools’ Forms 4 and 5 were invited to present a science project, which purpose was to identify scientific solutions to protect the environment. The three best teams were greatly awarded and the headmasters also received a trophy.

A “Climate 360” exhibition prepared by “Universcience”, a French institution, was organized as a side-event and a quiz on this exhibition was proposed to University of Botswana’s students. The two winners of the quiz received goody bags.
More than a contest, this event marks an important step towards finding solutions to protect our environment. Indeed, as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote :

“We do not inherit the earth from our parents; we borrow it from our children”
