Film Festival commemorating the First World War [fr]
A film festival was organized by the Embassy of France to celebrate the Commemoration of World War One, in partnership with the Embassies of Germany and the United States. It took place from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th November 2014 at the Alliance Française de Gaborone. A selection of French, American and European movies depicting various aspects of the war was displayed.
In front of an audience gathering about one hundred eminent guests, the Ambassador of France, H.E Mrs. Anne de la Blache, and her German counterpart, H.E. Mr. Rolf Ulrich, jointly opened the festival on November 3rd. The American chargé d’affaires a.i., Mr. Michael Murphy gave a speech later in the week, before the screening of the American movie “War Horse”. Finally, the Head of the European Union Delegation, H.E Mr. Alexander Baum had been invited to close the festival with a message highlighting the importance of peace and reconciliation.
This common event took place in the framework of a series of events organized throughout the year by European and American Embassies. It gathered over 250 guests over the whole week, reminding them of the historical importance of this war, including for Botswana as men of the then-Bechuanaland were part of the British forces serving on the French front.
