Commemoration of the World War I centenary on the occasion of Europe Day [fr]
On the occasion of Europe Day, the French and German Embassies as well as the British High Commission joined the European Union Delegation to Botswana to commemorate the centenary of World War I. The ceremony took place at the University of Botswana Sports Arena on 8th May 2014 in the presence of over 400 high level guests.
In their opening speeches, Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Skelemani, and H.E, Ambassador McGovern, Head of the European Union Delegation to Botswana, recalled the history of the European construction, and highlighted the long lasting and successful collaboration between the European Union and Botswana.
An audiovisual conference on the role played by Africa during World War 1 was then presented by Dr. Jeff Ramsay, historian and spokesman of the government.
A photo exhibition, courtesy of the German Embassy, and retracing the different steps of the war in Germany, was also displayed on the walls of the venue.
