Biodiversity – Kasane Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade [fr]
The French Ambassador to Botswana, Her Excellency Anne de la Blache is present at the Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade in Kasane on the 26th March 2015 – the follow-up conference coming one year after the London Declaration on the Illegal Wildlife Trade, adopted by 42 countries. The goal of the Kasane conference is to step up the collective effort against poaching and international trafficking at a time when emblematic species remained threatened with extinction.
France is playing a major role in this effort, in line with the action plan approved at the December 2013 Elysée summit on peace and security in Africa.
The bill to restore biodiversity, nature and landscapes, passed at first reading by the National Assembly on March 24, significantly increases penalties for trafficking. In the same vein, this past January the French authorities stopped issuing export certificates for raw ivory in order to place pressure on the market.
Finally, the French Development Agency will fund specific cooperative projects to combat poaching and illegal trading and to protect wildlife in its natural environment, particularly in Gabon.
